Avoid walking through thick foliage or sitting on the ground in places you suspect may be infested with chiggers.
Keep yourself covered in tight-knit clothing, pull your socks over you pants and make certain there are no open areas where chiggers might find skin. Throw your clothes into the washer immediately upon returning home and wash in hot water with detergent.
Sulfur powders are often used as chigger repellant and are usually available at your local drug store. Apply with a powder puff everywhere on exposed skin and clothing before venturing out.
DEET (Diethyl-m-toluamide) is a common ingredient in insect repellants and can work repelling chiggers. Deet is fairly harsh though, so only apply to your clothing. Make sure to cover every inch. Avoid skin and don?t spray on children or pets.
Citronella oil is is used in perfumes, soaps, candles, and sprays all designed to repell insects. Most people are familiar with them as mosquito repellents but they also work on chiggers.
