A Chigger bite is pretty harmless to humans. Though they do itch something awful but there are means to treat them and if you stay on top of the treatment you can avoid infection. A Chigger bite is like a Mosquito bite, but you will not see the bug coming. Chiggers are microscopic mites that live in wooded areas or in new construction homes and new lawns. It is recommended that if you go into the woods that you are prepared. Try using a bug spray, but make sure that it covers chiggers, there are many on the market that don’t. Summertime is when you are a walking target for these bugs.
Once a Chigger bites you, you will see red welts where the mite has bitten you. Sometimes you may have a small but itchy open wound. The worst symptom of a chigger bite is that itch very much. This is also where the health risk comes in. If you scratch at the wound and do not use any ointments to treat it, it could become infected. This is something you want to avoid because when an infection becomes bad enough it could travel into the blood stream and become more of a problem than it already is.
Before you take off for hiking or camping in the woods, make yourself a first aid pack that will be focused on chigger bites. You will need medical tape, bandages, anti bacterial creams such as Hydrocortisone Cream, Neosporin and Triple Antibiotic Ointment. You will need bug spray as we mentioned and hand sanitizer. You may also want to keep a bottle of anti lice shampoo on hand. It is said that it works well on the bites. A bottle of Nu-Skin works just as well.
Once you have discovered you have been bitten, treat the wound, clean the affected area and bandage up. When you can get to a doctor and have them look at it just to be on the safe side. Infections are nasty, so make sure that before you tend to the wound that you use the hand sanitizer and clean the germs from your hands and anytime after you feel the need to scratch, wash your hands thoroughly and you will make it through just fine. The bite isn’t as bad as an infection so take care of it the right way.
